Emma Raducanu Wins 2021 US Open, Becoming First British Woman to Win a Grand Slam Since 1977

Raducanu Defeats Fernandez in Straight Sets

Emma Raducanu, the 18-year-old British phenom, completed a shocking run through the US Open with a straight-sets victory over Leylah Fernandez in the women's singles final on Saturday.

Raducanu, who entered the tournament ranked 150th in the world, became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since Virginia Wade in 1977. She is also the first qualifier, male or female, to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era.

Raducanu's victory is a remarkable achievement, especially considering that she had never won a WTA Tour title before this year. She is now the youngest women's Grand Slam champion since Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon in 2004.

Highlights of the Match

Raducanu got off to a strong start in the match, breaking Fernandez's serve in the first game. She held her serve throughout the first set and broke Fernandez again in the seventh game to take a 5-2 lead. Fernandez held serve in the next game, but Raducanu closed out the set with a hold of her own.

Fernandez fought back in the second set, breaking Raducanu's serve in the third game. However, Raducanu broke back immediately and went on to win the next four games to take a 5-1 lead. Fernandez held serve in the next game, but Raducanu closed out the match with a hold of her own.

Raducanu's victory is a major upset, as Fernandez was the higher-ranked player and had looked impressive throughout the tournament. However, Raducanu played a flawless match and deserved to win.
